The Volkswagen group has held fast against the European economic crisis better than any other automotive group in the region, but the company hasn?t gone about its business unscathed. According to reports, the company may put on hold the development of the controversial Bentley EXP 9 F and Lamborghini Urus SUVs in an effort to trim costs.
?Such vehicles are anything but obligatory during a crisis,? Frankfurt-based Equinet AG analyst Tim Schuldt told Reuters. ?Delaying their launch would be no drama but help save costs.?
The two Volkswagen divisions ? Bentley and Lamborghini ? aim to replicate Porsche?s success with the Cayenne SUV. Much like what Porsche experienced when it first announced the vehicle, they ? not being known for anything other than ultra-premium and high-performance cars ? have been met with criticism regarding their planned SUVs. As such, some enthusiasts might actually view this development as a blessing of sorts.
But public criticism isn?t all Bentley and Lamborghini have to worry about. Even if their SUVs do make it into production, research firm IHS Automotive says that exorbitant pricing, increasing competition in the luxury SUV segment and the relatively small amount of potential buyers in key markets will limit their sales and profitability.
