Poll: US belief in warming rises with thermometer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Americans' belief in global warming is on the rise, along with temperatures and surprising weather changes, according to a new university poll.

The survey by the University of Michigan and Muhlenberg College says 62 percent of those asked last December think the Earth is getting warmer. That's up from 55 percent in the spring of that year and 58 percent in December 2010. It is the highest proportion in two years.

Nearly half the people who say they believe in global warming base that on personal observations of the weather. Climate researchers say that's reaching the correct conclusion for reasons that aren't quite right.

When asked an open-ended question about why they thought the Earth was warming, one-quarter of those surveyed pointed to temperatures they experience and another quarter cited other weather changes. One in 7 mentioned melting glaciers and polar sea ice, and 1 in 8 noted media coverage. Only 8 percent mentioned scientific research.

"It seems to be driven by an increased connection that the public is making between what they see in terms of weather conditions and climate change," said Chris Borick, the director Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion.

The poll was conducted from Dec. 4 to Dec. 21, after the U.S. experienced a record 14 billion-dollar weather disasters in 2011, including killer tornadoes, an unusual northeastern hurricane, a devastating southwestern drought and floods along major rivers.

At the same time, this poll was done before the official start of winter, so people were not yet affected by what has been a mild season for many regions.

Borick said that after the previous two winters, which were quite snowy, belief in global warming dropped dramatically. So he says the findings from a fresh poll to be conducted in upcoming weeks may again reflect views based on the latest weather trend.

Climate scientists say daily local weather is not evidence of climate change. But they also say long-term climate change is so dramatic that people recognize and experience it.

"I'm pleased that Americans believe in thermometers," said University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver. "People feel confident about what they personally experience. They mix up the difference between weather and climate. It's not unexpected. It's human nature."

While it is a misconception to think that every short-term extreme weather event ? like a flood or drought ? is caused by climate change, a warming world does make such events more frequent, Weaver said.

NASA climate scientist Gavin Schmidt called strange daily weather "the visceral experience of climate" for people.

Earlier versions of the Michigan and Muhlenberg survey showed that Americans' belief in global warming peaked in December 2008 with 72 percent.

In the most recent survey, 78 percent of Democrats, 55 percent of independents and 47 percent of Republicans said they thought there was "solid evidence" of climate change. Of those who did not believe climate change was occurring, 81 percent thought that scientists were overstating the evidence for their own interest.

The survey of 887 people has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The findings are similar to other recent polls, including a 2010 AP-Stanford University Poll showing 3 out of 4 Americans thought global temperatures were going up, said Stanford poll chief Jon Krosnick. That survey, too, indicated local weather affected people's views about climate change.

The lawsuit claims that, ?[i]f the NFL would have taken the necessary steps to oversee and protect Dave Duerson by warning him of the dangers of head traumas . . . then [he] would not have suffered dangerous repetitive head trauma, would have recovered more rapidly, and would not have sustained permanent damage to his brain which contributed to his death.?

This allegation presumes that the NFL knew or should have known about the dangers of head traumas during Duerson?s career, and that he would have chosen not to play if that information had been shared with him.

?CTE has been a known entity to the NFL for years,? said William Gibbs, who represents the Duerson estate.? ?This degenerative brain disease causes various symptoms ranging from cognitive decline to dementia.?? The NFL?s blatant disregard of the significance of this crisis amongst its retirees is baffling.?

?We have not seen the lawsuit and therefore our attorneys have not had an opportunity to review it,? the league said in a statement forwarded to PFT.? ?Dave Duerson was an outstanding football player and
citizen who made so many positive contributions but unfortunately encountered serious personal challenges later in his life. We sympathize with the Duerson family and continue to be saddened by this tragedy.?

Hundreds of former players have filed suit against the league, claiming that the NFL knew about the long-term dangers of concussions and failed to disclose those risks to players.? The NFL has argued that relief should be pursued through the collective bargaining process, given that players have been represented by a union, the NFL Players Association.

Duerson played from 1983 through 1993, with the Bears, Giants, and Cardinals, winning a pair of Super Bowl rings.? He was one of the named plaintiffs in the Reggie White antitrust lawsuit, and he was a member of the NFLPA Executive Committee.

Last year, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said that Duerson?s death has ?shaken me personally.?? The NFLPA hasn?t said anything about the various and growing concussion lawsuits.? In response to Duerson?s lawsuit, spokesman George Atallah told PFT that the NFLPA has no comment.

Given Duerson?s past role in the NFLPA, one thing to watch going forward is whether the NFLPA will take an affirmative position on the merit of the allegations that the NFL knew about the risks of head injuries and failed to take appropriate action.

VIENNA (AP) ? Russia said Wednesday the world should not draw "hasty conclusions" over Iran's most recent rebuff of U.N. attempts to investigate allegations the Islamic Republic hid secret work on atomic arms, but the U.S. and its allies accused Tehran of nuclear defiance.

Under international pressure to show restraint, Israel, which has warned repeatedly that it may strike Iran's nuclear facilities, pointedly urged major world powers to mind their own business, saying it alone would decide what to do to protect the Jewish state's security.

France said Iran's continued stonewalling of the International Atomic Energy Agency "is contrary to the intentions" expressed by Tehran in its recent offer to restart talks over its nuclear activities.

In Washington, White House spokesman Jay Carney said while world powers have not yet reached a decision on those talks, Iran's refusal to cooperate with the investigation "suggests that they have not changed their behavior when it comes to abiding by their international obligations."

The IAEA's acknowledgment of renewed failure came early Wednesday at the conclusion of the second trip in less then a month aimed at investigating suspicions of covert Iranian nuclear weapons work. The IAEA team had hoped to speak with key Iranian scientists suspected of working on the alleged weapons program, break down opposition to their plans to inspect documents related to nuclear work and secure commitments from Iranian authorities to allow future visits.

But mission head Herman Nackaerts acknowledged his team "could not find a way forward" in negotiations with Iranian officials. A separate IAEA communique clearly ? if indirectly ? blamed Tehran for the lack of progress.

"We engaged in a constructive spirit, but no agreement was reached," it quoted IAEA chief Yukiya Amano as saying.

As on the previous visit that ended in early February, Iran did not grant requests by the IAEA mission to visit Parchin ? a military site thought to be used for explosives testing related to nuclear detonations, the statement said

The statement also said that no agreement was reached on how to begin "clarification of unresolved issues in connection with Iran's nuclear program, particularly those relating to possible military dimensions."

The Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security said Wednesday it had new indications of hidden weapons work by Iran.

ISIS said that a cache of telexes to Western high-tech companies from the Physics Research Center in Tehran shows that from about 1990 to 1993, the center sought to purchase equipment and materials that could have been used in weapons research and development.

Tehran has acknowledged that the Physics Research Center in Tehran conducted nuclear-related research, but said the center's work was limited to efforts to prepare Iran's military and civilian population for dealing with a nuclear strike.

Iran insists it is using nuclear energy only to generate power, and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei proclaimed Wednesday that possession of atomic arms is a sin as well as "useless, harmful and dangerous." Iran asserts that the allegations of secret work on developing nuclear arms are based on fabricated U.S. and Israeli intelligence.

But in a 13-page summary late last year, the IAEA listed clandestine activities that he said can either be used in civilian or military nuclear programs, or "are specific to nuclear weapons."

Among these were indications that Iran has conducted high-explosives testing to set off a nuclear charge at Parchin.

Other suspicions include computer modeling of a core of a nuclear warhead and alleged preparatory work for a nuclear weapons test and development of a nuclear payload for Iran's Shahab 3 intermediate range missile ? a weapon that could reach Israel.

The IAEA trip and its aftermath was accompanied by renewed saber-rattling by Iran and Israel.

Iranian Gen. Mohammed Hejazi, who heads the military's logistical wing, warned that Iran will "not wait for enemies to take action against us."

"We will use all our means to protect our national interests," he told the semiofficial Fars news agency.

His comments followed Iran's announcement of war games to practice protecting nuclear and other sensitive sites, the latest military maneuver viewed as a message to the U.S. and Israel that the Islamic Republic is ready both to defend itself and to retaliate against an armed strike.

Israel and the U.S. have said military force remains a last-ditch option to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, but while Washington has recently tamped down its rhetoric ? and is thought to be urging Israel to practice restraint ? the Jewish state remains bellicose.

Russia, too, warned Israel against the consequences of attacking Iran, with Deputy Foreign Minister Gennyadi Gatilov telling the ITAR-Tass news agency Wednesday that such a strike "would be a catastrophe not only for the region but for the whole system of international relations."

But Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman rebuffed both Washington and Moscow, telling Israel's Channel 3 TV news the issue "is not their business."

"The security of the citizens of Israel, the future of the state of Israel, this is the responsibility of the Israeli government," he said. "We will make the best decision for the Israeli interest."

Shannon Kile, head of the Nuclear Weapons Project at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, warned the risk of military conflict was rising ? and not necessarily through the threat of direct Israeli attack.

"There is an escalation dynamic under way, especially in the Persian Gulf, where you could have a conflict arising from an accident, a misunderstanding, from a local commander acting on his own initiative and I think that's the problem," Kile said.

In Paris, Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said Tehran's continued stonewalling of the probe, now in its fourth year, "is another missed opportunity for Iran" to ease suspicions about its nuclear goals and reconcile with the rest of the world. Nadal said Iran's refusal to cooperate on the issue "is contrary to the intentions" of Iran's recent offer to restart nuclear talks after a series of abortive meetings over the past two years.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Iran's intransigence "is the path the leads to further international isolation." But German officials were cautious when asked about the possibility of imposing yet more sanctions against Iran in response to the latest setback.

Britain, which would join the U.S., China, Russia, France and Germany in any nuclear negotiations with Iran, said it wasn't yet clear what impact the IAEA visit's failure might have on the international community's response to Tehran's recent offer of renewed talks.

"We share the IAEA's disappointment. The IAEA genuinely wants to make progress and we want the Iranians to engage in meaningful talks," a spokesman for Britain's foreign ministry said on customary condition of anonymity in line with policy.

Russia urged renewed efforts to engage Iran on its suspected secret nuclear work.

"We must not make hasty conclusions," Gatilov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, told reporters, calling for the IAEA to "continue contacts" with Iran on the issue.

The IAEA said no further talks were planned for the moment. But Iran's envoy to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh also said "more time was needed" for final agreement on the issue.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Medication via remote-control instead of a shot? Scientists implanted microchips in seven women that did just that, oozing out the right dose of a bone-strengthening drug once a day without them even noticing.

Implanted medicine is a hot field, aiming to help patients better stick to their meds and to deliver those drugs straight to the body part that needs them.

But Thursday's study is believed the first attempt at using a wirelessly controlled drug chip in people. If this early-stage testing eventually pans out, the idea is that doctors one day might program dose changes from afar with the push of a button, or time them for when the patient is sleeping to minimize side effects.

The implant initially is being studied to treat severe bone-thinning osteoporosis. But it could be filled with other types of medication, said co-inventor Robert Langer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"It's like 'Star Trek,'" said Langer, who co-authored the study appearing Thursday in the journal Science Translational Medicine. "Just send a signal over a special radio wave, and out comes the drug."

Today's medication implants continuously emit their drugs until they run dry. One example is a dime-sized wafer that oozes chemotherapy directly onto the site of a surgically removed brain tumor, targeting any remaining cancer cells. In the study, the microchip held doses of that drug inside tiny wells that are sealed shut with a nano-thin layer of gold. Sending a wireless signal causes the gold on an individual well to dissolve, allowing that dose to diffuse into the bloodstream, Langer explained.

In a doctor's-office procedure, the microchip was implanted just below the waistline into eight women with osteoporosis in Denmark. Testing found one microchip wasn't responding to the signals. The other seven women had their implants programmed to automatically emit a once-a-day dose beginning eight weeks later.

The chips could have begun working right away, said Robert Farra, CEO of MicroCHIPS Inc., a Massachusetts company that has licensed the device and funded the study. But animal research showed a scar tissue-like membrane forms around the pacemaker-sized implant. So he waited until that blockage formed to signal the first of 20 once-a-day doses to begin, to see if the drug could get through.

Blood testing showed the implant delivered the drug as effectively as the women's usual daily injections, and the device appeared to be safe, the researchers reported.

It will take large-scale studies to prove the implant works as well as the long-used shots, cautioned osteoporosis specialist Dr. Ethel Siris of New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University.

"They're a long way from proving that this mode of administration is going to work," she said. But it's an intriguing idea because "it's daunting to have to take a daily shot."

Farra said his company hopes to begin a larger-scale test, using a chip that can hold 365 doses, in 2014. While doses of this osteoporosis medicine typically aren't adjusted, he said, the eventual goal is for patients to carry a cell phone-sized device that would provide wireless feedback to the doctor who programs their implants.

Nowitzki, Marion lift Mavs over Clippers 96-92 (AP)

DALLAS ? Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points, 11 in the final 6-plus minutes, Shawn Marion added 16, and the Dallas Mavericks held on to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 96-92 on Monday night.

Jason Terry, Vince Carter and Brendan Haywood all contributed 10 points for the Mavs, who've won 10 in a row at home against the Clippers and extended their overall winning streak to four games.

Caron Butler of the Clippers scored a season-high 23 points against his former team, and Blake Griffin added 20 points.

Chris Paul had 16 points and nine assists for the Clippers, but Griffin's problems from the foul line cost his team as he missed seven of nine free throws.

The Clippers, who completed a 4-2 road trip, haven't beaten the defending NBA champs in Dallas since April 19, 2006.

Dallas took control with a 7-0 fourth-quarter run capped by Marion's layup with 4:48 remaining for an 86-83 edge.

Griffin had a chance to get the Clippers closer, but missed five straight free throws until connecting with 2:15 to play to pull his team within two points at 86-84.

Jason Kidd set up Terry for a layup with 2:02 left, and Nowitzki intercepted Griffin's pass with 1:47 showing, and drained two free throws to extend Dallas' edge to 90-84.

Griffin's three-point play with 1:24 remaining and Kenyon Martin's layup with 1 minute left narrowed the Mavericks' lead to 90-89.

Nowitzki drained a 19-footer from the right wing and, after Marion stole the ball from Martin, converted two free throws with 21.2 seconds left for a 94-89 advantage. Paul's 3-pointer with 17.8 seconds got the Clippers within two points, and Butler missed a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left.

Delonte West made two free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

The Clippers carried a 76-74 advantage into the final quarter.

Haywood worked inside for 10 of Dallas' first 22 points and the Mavs carried a 27-19 lead into the second quarter.

Dallas was in front at halftime 55-47 behind 22-for-38 field-goal accuracy (58 percent).

Butler, who received a championship ring from the Mavs in pregame ceremonies, got rolling early when he connected on his first three 3-point attempts in the first quarter.

The Clippers ended a 10-game overall losing streak against the Mavs on Jan. 18 with a 91-89 win in Los Angeles. Chauncey Billups hit the winning 3-pointer with 1 second left. Billups is out for the season with a torn left Achilles' tendon sustained in a game on Feb. 6.

Paul sat out the season's first meeting with Dallas due to a strained left hamstring.

Notes: Butler was a member of the Mavericks' title-winning team last season but missed the final 53 games of the regular season plus the playoffs with a ruptured right patellar tendon. Butler, signed by the Clippers in December as a free agent, made a spirited effort to get his knee healthy enough to contribute for Dallas in the playoffs and Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said before the game that Butler "was very close to being active for the finals. That's how hard he worked." ... Martin, who grew up in Dallas, played his fourth game for the Clippers since signing as a free agent on Feb. 3. ... Before the game, Carlisle called Paul "the best playmaker in basketball."
